Metea School History

The schools of Bethlehem Township had a rustic beginning at a time of major advances in the country. While the township was organized in 1836, the Erie Canal was opened about the same time causing grain prices to triple while land sold for $1.25 per acre. And later on the national stage, Edison demonstrates an electric light bulb, and Bell invents the telephone. Obviously, major changes were ahead for the country and Bethlehem Township. Some were good, some were not. The first trainload of oranges were shipped East on the brand new transcontinental railroad and the massive buffalo herds had just been wiped out. Perhaps most amazing is that basketball would not be invented for another 5 years causing some to ask, "Why even have a school?" Perhaps it was the looming tidal wave of change that stimulated the advance in education in Bethlehem Township. One of the first school houses was built entirely of logs on a dirt floor. The seats and desks were also built of logs split in half and smoothed to sit and write. Each school had about 50 - 60 pupils ranging in age from 6 - 21. There was no course of study. Instead, pupils brought to school whatever book or paper they had and, from these, learned their letters and reading. The school term lasted only about 3 months a year. Very little scholastic preparation was needed to procure a license to teach. Wages ranged from $1.25 - $2.00 a day, and in some cases, even less. As the township population increased, the people began to demand better schools. So an early step was giving the township trustee the right to hire all teachers instead district patrons. The first real system of schools in Bethlehem Township consisted of 10 schools with a school term of 6-8 months. The school erected in Metea in 1898 had a wooden frame and 3 rooms for both elementary and high school. By 1910 this building proved to be too small, so in 1911 through the efforts of Trustee Lyman Yantis, a new high school was constructed of brick for $15,000. Its first principal was Hubert Anderson with a first graduating class of 4 students. The images that follow are the treasures of the many students who filled the halls of the school they called Metea. Why did the name METEA come from? Chief Me-Te-A pronounced, Me-TEE-uh (accent on TEE) Potawatomie chief of the Illinois Nation. A significant chief of noted eloquence involved in several treaty negotiations in Northern Indiana. This image is from a book of original paintings by Charles King in the Smithsonian Museum entitled, “History of the Indian Tribes of North American” by Thomas McKenney. The name translates as, believe it or not, Kiss Me.

"Floating Palace" School - 500N @ Hwy 25. This 2nd school built in 1892, abandoned in 1922.	1st Floating Palace schoolhouse now at corner of 475N & SR 25. Moved in 1914 by George and 14 yr. old son Dyer Horney 1/4mi W of original location. Called the "Floating Palace" because this was its second move. Used as school from 1860's - 90's when new school was built at 500N & SR25.
"1st Baal's Temple" School - 525N @ 400E	1st Baal's Temple was moved to Horace Smith farm in 1916 when new school was built. in 2011 with additions on Dwight and Ron Smith farm.

"Hickory Flat" School Bethlehem Twp school #3 closed in 1913 (Photo not available.) All Metea Schools in 1911 The 1st school had 1 room and was used until 1898 and then used for storage until after 1911, when it was moved to the first farm north (Wilbur Zieg, Harry Conrad). The 2nd school had 3 rooms and was used for storage after 1911. In winter was also used for horses and storage until it was torn down sometime after 1942.

In 1925 a new 2-wing addition was added with complete financing by township funds mainly through a bond issue. The entire community seemed very much in favor of the consolidated school at this time. The builders were Sullivan and Dowman, Trustee Guy Smith, and Principal Solon Long. This new structure not only added 6 classrooms, but also gymnasium, stage, study hall, and power plant. A hot lunch program began in 1948 with Principal Vernon Zieg and Trustee John Conrad. The first cooks were Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Maroney. They were paid $4/day and meals cost 20 cents/day. Mothers from the community not only solicited money to help build this program, but also served as assistant cooks.

After more than a generation using classrooms for industrial arts, manual training, and farm shop, the need for a dedicated shop area was clearly felt. In 1957, through the efforts trustee Dale Davidson, a 62 x 40 ft. steel building was erected behind the school with a passageway through the stage. Boys enrolled in vocational agriculture classes did most of the construction.
THE END In 1982 the school building that housed students for 56 years (1911-67) was disassembled into bricks, wood, metal, and dust. For those who were educated there, memories will last somewhat longer. Timeline: 1911-1961: All 12 grades 1961-1964: South Caston Elementary (K-6) 1964-1967: Caston Elementary, South Campus (K-6) 1968: Sold at auction to to Dale Davidson who had his grain bin business in it until 1982
